Microsoft 365 for Business in the UAE
OptiFi is a Microsoft partner implementing Microsoft 365 for UAE businesses — licensing, migration and the security configuration that a new tenant does not have by default. Business email compromise is the loss that actually happens to UAE trading companies, and the controls that stop it are unglamorous, cheap and usually switched off.
Licensing, and where the money leaks
Microsoft 365 is sold in tiers that look similar and price very differently. Business Basic has no desktop applications. Business Standard has them. Business Premium adds the security and device management that most of the plan's real value sits in — and it is the tier most UAE SMEs should be on and most are not.
The waste is almost always in the other direction too: licences for people who left, E-tier licences bought for a requirement Business Premium already covers, and duplicate subscriptions from a period when two people were buying independently. A licence review before renewal usually pays for itself.

The security settings that are off by default
A new Microsoft 365 tenant is not secure out of the box. Multi-factor authentication, conditional access, external-sharing limits and mailbox auditing all need enabling, and a tenant set up by whoever was available on the day usually has none of them.
Business email compromise is the loss that follows, and UAE trading companies are targeted heavily because the pattern works: an attacker watches a mailbox, waits for a real invoice, and sends amended bank details from a domain one character different. Nothing is hacked in a way anyone notices, and the money leaves legitimately.
The defences are unglamorous and effective — MFA everywhere, alerts on forwarding rules, external-sender warnings, and a payment process where a change of bank details is confirmed by phone to a number you already held.

Sign-in rules by location, device and risk rather than a password alone.

Notification when a mailbox rule starts sending mail elsewhere, which is the classic first sign.

Where the data sits, and where the mail flows
Microsoft offers data residency options that determine where tenant data is stored at rest, and for some UAE businesses the answer matters contractually. It is set at provisioning and is not a switch to flip afterwards, which makes it a question for the beginning rather than the end.
Mail flow deserves the same attention. SPF, DKIM and DMARC records decide whether your domain can be impersonated, and a great many UAE businesses run with them incomplete — which means an attacker can send mail that appears to come from your own domain, to your own staff.
Migration, and the day after
Mail migration is judged on one measure: whether anyone lost anything. We migrate mailboxes, calendars, contacts and shared folders with a cutover scheduled so a problem surfaces while there is time to fix it, not on a Monday morning.
The larger question is what happens next. Most organisations use a fraction of what they already pay for — Teams as a chat tool and nothing else, SharePoint unused while files sit on a desktop, no retention policy at all. Adoption work on what you already own is usually better value than the next purchase.
