Most of the risk in this migration is not technical. It is in deciding what comes across, and in choosing the cutover date.
What moves, and what should not
Masters move: customers, suppliers, items, the chart of accounts. Opening balances move, agreed to your last signed accounts so the new ledger starts from something defensible.
Transaction history generally should not. Forcing years of Tally transactions into Odoo is where migrations lose weeks, and it buys very little — the old system stays readable for the rare occasion somebody needs to look something up. Businesses that insist on full history usually regret the schedule rather than the decision.

- Open items: unpaid invoices, unreceived purchase orders, current stock
- History left in Tally, readable, not migrated
The cleaning is the project
Every Tally file we have migrated contained the same customer several times with several spellings, items that were superseded years ago, and a chart of accounts with at least one catch-all doing too much work.
Importing that unchanged moves the problem into a more expensive system. Cleaning it is unglamorous, it is most of the effort, and it should be scoped and priced honestly rather than discovered in week three.
Timing the cutover
Around a VAT period boundary, so a single return comes from a single system. A period split across two systems turns a straightforward migration into a reconciliation exercise nobody budgeted for.
Run parallel for a period afterwards. A configuration error found while the old system is still authoritative costs an afternoon; the same error found after Tally has been switched off costs considerably more.
What UAE businesses gain
Usually two things specifically. Landed costs — freight, duty and clearing inside item cost rather than expensed, which makes reported margin real. And one system rather than several, so stock value in the warehouse and in the ledger are the same number without a monthly reconciliation.
